American Dystopia: Stop Reading

September 30 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm EDT

Free

“You don’t have to burn books to destroy a culture. Just get people to stop reading them” (Ray Bradbury). This lecture debriefs students on literary censorship in American public schools and libraries, which often feels dystopian and obstructs the democratic right to read. The lecture would explain how/why books are banned surrounding the top banned books for 2020. Thematically, the audience will recognize a trend in books which involve racial minorities, gender, LGBTQ, and politics, and that banned books are unwarranted — borderline dystopian, if you will. Finally we will consider: what happens when you don’t “stop reading.”

The lecture will be followed by a 10-15 minute Q&A.
